If I had to single out a region in France for unconditional love and adulation, this would be it. It is where my heart is. Back in the late 1980s when I was about 19, I would spend hours in Avignon and its surrounding villages chatting to the locals, chilling in cafés and making new friends. When I think about it now, I hear that that line from Passenger’s beautiful song ‘When we were young’: “We used to never say never, Used to think we’d live forever, Flying free beneath the sun”. That was me: insouciant, nonchalant and a world class fantasist dreaming my way through the south of France with not a care in the world. I am sure it is where I perfected the art of small talk, partying, flirting and procrastination, and learnt to appreciate fully the value of the siesta, one of southern Europe’s greatest innovations.
This region is the land of milk and honey with its warm climate, piercing sunlight, rolling vineyards, hearty food and wines, lavender fields, olive groves, abundant fish and fresh, luscious fruits. I love it. Did I mention that already?
